  • Hoodoos kiss at Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona, USA. The Heart of the Rocks Loop Trail (7 to 9 miles) makes an excellent day hike through fascinating arrays of hoodoos. 27 million years ago, huge volcanic eruptions laid down 2000 feet of ash and pumice which fused into rhyolitic tuff. This rock has eroded into fascinating hoodoos, spires, and balanced rocks which lie above the surrounding desert grasslands at elevations between 5100 and 7800 feet. At Chiricahua, the Sonoran desert meets the Chihuahuan desert, and the Rocky Mountains meet Mexico's Sierra Madre, making one of the most biologically diverse areas in the northern hemisphere. While we drove the dirt road to nearby Portal, Arizona, Carol saw a mountain lion crossing the road! Other animals here include javelina, coatimundi, bears, skunks, and deer.

  • The pounding Pacific Ocean has eroded a bluff to create Haystack Rock, a 235-foot (72-meter) tall monolith (or sea stack), on Cannon Beach, on the Oregon coast. Haystack Rock is part of the Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site and is managed by Oregon Parks and Recreation below the mean high water (MHW) level, and above the MHW level by the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

  • The Tasman Sea has eroded fascinating patterns in the rocks of Martins Bay on the Hollyford Track, Fiordland National Park, South Island of New Zealand. We enjoyed an easy 3-day version of the Hollyford Track: Day 1: fly from Milford Sound to Martins Bay, walk to its oceanfront Hut, and see New Zealand fur seals. Day 2: jetboat on Lake McKerrow to Pyke River Confluence, hike to Hidden Falls Hut for overnight lodging. Day 3: tramp out to Hollyford Road end to our prearranged car shuttle. In 1990, UNESCO honored Te Wahipounamu - South West New Zealand as a World Heritage Area.

  • Smoothly eroded rock walls of Steall Gorge (or Nevis Gorge), downstream from Steall Waterfall, in the valley of Glen Nevis near Fort William, Scotland, United Kingdom, Europe. Steall Falls is Scotland's second highest waterfall, with a single drop of 120 meters or 393 ft. One of the best short hikes in Scotland ascends 220 m to the falls (3.5 km / 2.25 miles round trip) via Nevis Gorge, an area owned by the John Muir Trust, which is attempting to restore wilderness here after centuries of burning and grazing.

  • See fascinating patterns of eroded sandstone along the trail to Rim Overlook, in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, USA. Capitol Reef National Park is centered upon the 100-mile-long Waterpocket Fold, the steep eastern limb of the Circle Cliffs Uplift, formed in Late Cretaceous time, during the Laramide Orogeny. Pressure caused by the subduction of the Farallon Plate beneath the North American Plate along the west coast caused several huge folds like this in southeast Utah, USA. Steeply tilted Triassic and Jurassic rocks form the hogbacks of the Waterpocket Fold and Capitol Reef, which is built of dark-red dune-formed Wingate Sandstone, thinly bedded river deposits of the Kayenta Formation, crested by the massive, white, dune-formed Navajo Sandstone.

  • Eroded boulder. Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site is popular for birding and bouldering (rock climbing) in El Paso County, Texas, USA. Geology: In the park, three oddly lumpy mountains rise from the Chihuahuan Desert. In this area 320 million years ago, an inland sea laid thick sediments which later solidified into limestone. Around 35 million years ago, hot magma (molten rock) pushed up into the underground limestone layers and cooled into a syenite pluton (a form of igneous rock or cooled magma). Over millions of years, wind and water wore away the limestone covering then sculpted the syenite into the present hills. Cracks and hollows (huecos in Spanish) in the rocks hold rain for several days to several months. Most of the huecos occur naturally, but early residents also built dams and tanks. To better preserve the sensitive ecosystem, visitors should avoid touching the pools, which host the eggs of freshwater shrimp and spadefoot toads. History: Throughout the last 10,000 years, Hueco Tanks has provided water, food and shelter to travelers in the Chihuahuan Desert. People left clues to their stories in unique pictographs and petroglyphs visible today. Starting in 1858, Hueco Tanks served for a year as a relay station and water source for the historic Butterfield Overland Mail (which was then shifted south to a safer route). Twice a week, the Butterfield stagecoach carried passengers and US Mail in just 22 days to San Francisco starting from Memphis, Tennessee or St. Louis, Missouri; for the first time, people separated by nearly 2000 miles of wilderness could communicate. Escontrias Ranch started here in 1898, became a tourist attraction by the 1940s and became a country park in 1965, then a state park in 1969. Directions: From El Paso's Montana Avenue (US Highway 62/180), turn north at RM 2775.

  • Snail-shaped rock, Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, south of Farmington, in San Juan County, New Mexico, USA. This fantasy world of strange rock formations is made of interbedded sandstone, shale, mudstone, coal, and silt. These rock layers have weathered into eerie hoodoos (pinnacles, spires, and cap rocks). This was once a riverine delta west of an ancient sea, the Western Interior Seaway, which covered much of New Mexico 70 million years ago. Swamps built up organic material which became beds of lignite. Water disappeared and left behind a 1400-foot (430 m) layer of jumbled sandstone, mudstone, shale, and coal. The ancient sedimentary deposits were uplifted with the rest of the Colorado Plateau, starting about 25 million years ago. Waters of the last ice age eroded the hoodoos now visible. The high desert widerness of Bisti is managed by the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
