  • Hike the Garden Wall Trail from Logan Pass through fields of flowers in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Since 1932, Canada and USA have shared Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, which UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site (1995) containing two Biosphere Reserves (1976). Rocks in the park are primarily sedimentary layers deposited in shallow seas over 1.6 billion to 800 million years ago. During the tectonic formation of the Rocky Mountains 170 million years ago, the Lewis Overthrust displaced these old rocks over newer Cretaceous age rocks. Glaciers carved spectacular U-shaped valleys and pyramidal peaks as recently as the Last Glacial Maximum (the last "Ice Age" 25,000 to 13,000 years ago). Of the 150 glaciers existing in the mid 1800s, only 25 active glaciers remain in the park as of 2010, and all may disappear by 2020, say climate scientists.

  • Pink & white flowers of liverleaf wintergreen / Pyrola asarifolia (formerly called Pink Wintergreen) is native to moist, wooded locations in western North America. Pyrola asarifolia has a single unbranched stem rising from basal rosettes of shiny, round, stalked leaves, topped by an elongated flower cluster, with between 5 and 25 heads. Leafless versions are saprophytes, which absorb their nutrients from the rich soil humus. Individual flowers are downward-pointing cups formed of five white, pale pink or reddish pink petals and centered on ten stamens. Stamens have white filaments and relatively long, purple anthers. Beneath the petals are five green sepals, longer than wide. At the base of the short flower stalks are a few narrow bracts, about as long as the stalk. Photographed in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada.

  • A white and pink orchid pops in contrast with a background of bamboo. The exquisite Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden near Hilo is my favorite garden in the Hawaiian Islands. Delightful paths and boardwalks take you through a soothing green tropical wonderland endowed with streams (Alakahi Stream, Boulder Creek), waterfalls (Onomea Falls) and oceanfront vistas across Onomea Bay. Purchased in 1977 and transformed over 8 backbreaking years by Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse, the garden opened to the public in 1984 and was donated to a nonprofit trust in 1995. On the Big Island, a few minutes north of Hilo off of Route 19, take the narrow four-mile Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive which winds along coastal cliffs, across one-lane wooden bridges over picturesque waterfalls, to reach this peaceful oasis. The garden grows over 2000 plant species, representing more than 125 families and 750 genera, with diverse palms (nearly 200 species), heliconias (80+ species) and bromeliads (80+ species). Address: 27-717 Old Mamalahoa Highway, Papaikou, HI 96781, USA.

Capitan Reef is one of the best-preserved exposed Permian-age fossil reefs in the world. The park also features the landmark peak of El Capitan, along the historic Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach line (1857-1861), which carried passengers and US Mail in just 22 days to San Francisco starting from Memphis, Tennessee or St. Louis, Missouri, twice a week. Most tourists are attracted by nearby Canadian Rockies parks along fast paved highways and skip gravel logging roads, thereby leaving the spectacular "Bugaboos" as a quiet retreat for hikers, climbers, and luxury CMH helicopter guests. Directions: From Brisco (about 44 kms north of Invermere on Hwy 95), follow signs to Bugaboo Provincial Park and CMH Lodge on a gravel logging road. After 47 kms, turn right on a rougher road to reach Cobalt Lake trail head and Kain Hut trail head, or continue straight along Bugaboo Forest Service Road. Before you reach the gate of luxury CMH Bugaboo Lodge, a left turn crosses Bugaboo Creek bridge: then a left reaches Bugaboo Septet Recreation Site (4 primitive campsites in a free, user-maintained campground reachable by 2WD vehicles) or straight up takes 4WD vehicles and hikers to Chalice Creek trailhead.
