  • An intriguing island of tufa towers reflect in alkaline waters at South Tufa Area, in Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve, Lee Vining, California, USA. Orange algae forms colorful mats. The Reserve protects wetlands that support millions of birds, and preserves Mono Lake's distinctive tufa towers -- calcium-carbonate spires and knobs formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water. Mono Lake has no outlet and is one of the oldest lakes in North America. Over the past million years, salts and minerals have washed into the lake from Eastern Sierra streams and evaporation has made the water 2.5 times saltier than the ocean. This desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp, and provides critical nesting habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp and blackflies. Since 1941, diversion of lake water tributary streams by the city of Los Angeles lowered the lake level, which imperiled the migratory birds. In response, the Mono Lake Committee won a legal battle that forced Los Angeles to partially restore the lake level.

  • A peak reflects in Twin Lakes at sunrise in Sawtooth Wilderness, Blaine County, Idaho, USA. in Sawtooth Wilderness, Blaine County, Idaho, USA. On October 6-7, 2020, starting from Tin Cup Trailhead, I hiked the Alice-Toxaway Loop clockwise for 20 miles including an overnight stay at idyllic Twin Lakes. The first day to Twin Lakes was a moderate 7.4 miles with 2090 feet gain. The second day returned via Toxaway Lake and Farley Lake for 12.5 miles with 1260 feet up and 2940 feet down. For the most dramatic scenic build-up, I recommend backpacking 3 days counterclockwise staying at Toxaway Lake then Twin Lakes. (On a 2007 backpacking trip in August, we enjoyed staying 2 nights at Alice Lake and day-hiked to Toxaway.) The Sawtooth Range (part of the Rocky Mountains) are made of pink granite of the 50 million year old Sawtooth batholith. This image was stitched from multiple overlapping photos.

The White Pass Trail (or Dead Horse Trail) was one of the two main passes used by prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush. It leads from Skagway, Alaska, to the chain of lakes at the headwaters of the Yukon River: Crater Lake, Lake Lindeman, and Bennett Lake. Skagway was founded in 1897 on the Alaska Panhandle. The 98-mile/158-km South Klondike Highway (Skagway-Carcross Road) connects Skagway over White Pass via British Columbia to the Alaska Highway, in the Yukon southeast of Whitehorse.

  • Ice reflection in boat window. See shapely icebergs from South Sawyer Glacier floating in Tracy Arm Fjord, in the Alaska Panhandle, via day cruise from Juneau, Alaska, USA. We highly recommend the smoothly stabilized day cruise aboard the 56-foot boat Adventure Bound. This journey to the heart of Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness (Tongass National Forest) rivals Norwegian fjords and adds a punchbowl of icebergs from the spectacular South Sawyer Glacier, which calved ice into the tidewater with a rumble and a splash. Whales, bears, sea lions and other wildlife showed up along the way. The fjord twists narrowly 30 miles into the coastal mountains, with peaks jutting up to a mile high, draped with tumbling waterfalls.

  • A wall reflects in the moat around Nijo Castle (Nijo-jo) in Kyoto, Japan. Nijo Castle (Nijo-jo) was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1867). His grandson Iemitsu completed the castle's palace buildings 23 years later and further expanded the castle by adding a five-story castle keep. After the Tokugawa Shogunate fell in 1867, Nijo Castle was used as an imperial palace for a while before being donated to the city and opened to the public as a historic site. Its palace buildings are some of the best surviving examples of castle palace architecture of Japan's feudal era, and the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994.

  • A bridge reflects in a pond at Kyoto Imperial Palace (Kyoto Gosho), in Kyoto, Japan. Kyoto Imperial Palace (Kyoto Gosho) was the residence of Japan's Imperial Family until 1868, when the emperor and capital were moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. Kyoto Gosho is within spacious Kyoto Imperial Park (Kyoto Gyoen National Garden) which also encompasses Sento Imperial Palace. The current Imperial Palace was reconstructed in 1855 after it had burnt down and moved around town repeatedly over the centuries. The complex is enclosed by long walls and has several gates, halls and gardens. The enthronement ceremonies of Emperors Taisho and Showa were held in the palace's main hall. Tokyo Imperial Palace is now used for enthronement ceremonies. The palace grounds (but not the buildings) can now be entered and explored without joining a tour and without any prior arrangements.

  • Lit at night, Matsumoto Castle reflects in the moat by its red bridge. The castle was built from 1592-1614 in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Matsumoto Castle is a "hirajiro" - a castle built on plains rather than on a hill or mountain, in Matsumoto. Matsumotojo's main castle keep and its smaller, second donjon were built from 1592 to 1614, well-fortified as peace was not yet fully achieved at the time. In 1635, when military threats had ceased, a third, barely defended turret and another for moon viewing were added to the castle. Interesting features of the castle include steep wooden stairs, openings to drop stones onto invaders, openings for archers, as well as an observation deck at the top, sixth floor of the main keep with views over the Matsumoto city.

A settlement was established here by the 500s AD with the first royal charter being granted by King David I in the 1100s. The Gaelic king Mac Bethad Mac Findláich (MacBeth) whose 11th-century killing of King Duncan was immortalised in Shakespeare's largely fictionalized play Macbeth, held a castle within the city where he ruled as Mormaer of Moray and Ross. Inverness lies near two important battle sites: the 11th-century battle of Blàr nam Fèinne against Norway which took place on The Aird and the 18th-century Battle of Culloden which took place on Culloden Moor. Inverness means "Mouth of the River Ness" in Scottish Gaelic. Surveys place it as one of the happiest places in the UK. This image was stitched from several overlapping photos.

  • An old window reflects cumulus clouds at Bodie, California's official state gold rush ghost town. Bodie State Historic Park lies in the Bodie Hills east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mono County, near Bridgeport, California, USA. After W. S. Bodey's original gold discovery in 1859, profitable gold ore discoveries in 1876 and 1878 transformed "Bodie" from an isolated mining camp to a Wild West boomtown. By 1879, Bodie had a population of 5000-7000 people with 2000 buildings. At its peak, 65 saloons lined Main Street, which was a mile long. Bodie declined rapidly 1912-1917 and the last mine closed in 1942. Bodie became a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and Bodie State Historic Park in 1962.

These prominent windows front the finest home in Bodie, owned by James Stuart Cain from the 1890s - 1940s. Bodie is now California's official state gold rush ghost town. Jessie McGath originally built this house for his new wife in 1879, and JS Cain bought it in the 1890s. Cain moved to Bodie when he was 25 and built an empire starting with putting lumber barges on Mono Lake and transporting timber to support mine shafts, stoke boilers for machinery, build & heat buildings, and cook food. Cain eventually took control of the Stamp Mill though court action and went on to be the principal property owner and one of the richest men in town.
