  • Berggasthaus Alter Säntis is perched dramatically atop Säntis (2502 m / 8218 feet), the highest peak of the Alpstein range and the Appenzell Alps, located in northeast Switzerland, Europe. On right is Altmann peak (2435m), second highest of the Appenzell Alps. Shared by three cantons, Säntis can be reached easily via aerial tramway (Luftseilbahn) from Schwägalp, or with effort via wonderful trails, to see vast mountain views across six countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France and Italy. We highly recommend staying overnight on top of Säntis as we did at Berggasthaus Alter Säntis, a fifth-generation family-run mountain inn since 1850, offering modern private double and dormitory lodging with good food and magnificent views. From where we joined it at Rotsteinpass, the spectacular, rocky Lisengrat trail to Säntis is rigged with safety cables in case of icy or wet conditions (and can be scary for those with fear of heights). In rainy weather the next day, we took the easy tram down to Schwägalp instead of hiking to Ebenalp. The Appenzell Alps rise between Lake Walen and Lake Constance. This image was stitched from multiple overlapping photos.

  • Transmission tower on Säntis peak, seen from Lisengrat. Weaving through limestone outcroppings, we hiked the stunning Lisengrat, a sinuous chain-protected trail from Rotsteinpass to the summit of Säntis. The Lisengrat is a magnificent ridge route between Säntis (2502 m / 8218 feet elevation) and Altmann (2435 m / 7989 ft), the two highest peaks in Appenzell's Alpstein range. The rocky route is safe, but can be scary for those with fear of heights. Shared by three cantons, Säntis can be reached easily via cable car or with effort via trails, to see vast mountain views across six countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France and Italy. The Appenzell Alps rise between Lake Walen and Lake Constance.

See four of the world's six highest peaks: Cho Oyu (far left), Mount Everest (center left), adjacent Lhotse, and distant pyramid of Makalu (all over 8,000 meters elevation). The largest glacier in Nepal, Ngozumpa Glacier, flows along the valley floor covered in gray rocks, and a side moraine dams Gokyo Lakes. Left of green Third Gokyo Lake is Gokyo village (15,583 feet / 4750 meters), a small cluster of teahouses for trekkers and climbers. Sagarmatha National Park was created in 1976 and honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Panorama stitched from 8 photos.

  • Mount Olympus (2918 meters or 9568 feet elevation), highest peak in Greece, rises high above Litohoro village. The ancient Greeks considered awesome Mount Olympus to be the home of the god Zeus. Mount Olympus was declared the first national park of Greece in 1937. It is 100 kilometers southwest of Thessaloniki. Mount Olympus has eight peaks including the "Throne of Zeus" (2909 metres) and Mytikas (2919 metres, the highest summit). Mytikas, the highest of several summits on Mount Olympus, was never climbed until 1913 by a native of Litohoro and two Swiss climbers. Hiking season runs June through October. The hut will be most crowded in July and August, when advance reservations are most necessary. May through mid-June have the best climate, not overly hot. Visit the EOS (Greek Alpine Club) office in Litohoro for details of trails, mountain refuge reservations, and advice about weather conditions. In May 2001, Carol and I attempted to reach one of two summits (Mytikas, or the easier Skolio) with our excellent climbing guide Michalis (Mike) Vasileiou from Robinson Expeditions, but he wisely stopped our group due to slippery fresh snowfall and fog 300 feet short of the top.

We backpacked to Big Sandy Lake Campground (11 miles round trip with 1000 feet gain). Two hours before sunrise, I departed from Big Sandy Lake to reach Jackass Pass viewpoint for Cirque of the Towers and Lonesome Lake (6.5 miles round trip, 1860 ft gain) on the Continental Divide Trail. The Continental Divide follows the crest of the "Winds". Mostly composed of granite batholiths formed deep within the earth over 1 billion years ago, the Wind River Range is one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America. These granite monoliths were uplifted, exposed by erosion, then carved by glaciers 500,000 years ago to form cirques and U-shaped valleys. This image was stitched from multiple overlapping photos.

  • Berggasthaus Alter Säntis is perched dramatically atop Säntis (2502 m / 8218 feet), the highest peak of the Alpstein range and the Appenzell Alps, located in northeast Switzerland, Europe.

  • Walk an idyllic path in Selva di Val Gardena village beneath Langkofel/Sassolungo peak on your way to Vallunga, in the Dolomites, South Tyrol, Italy, Europe. The beautiful ski resort of Selva di Val Gardena (German: Wolkenstein in Gröden; Ladin: Sëlva Gherdëine) makes a great hiking base in the Dolomites, in the South Tyrol region (Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol) of Italy, Europe. For our favorite hike in the Dolomiti, start from Selva with the first morning bus to Ortisei, take the Seceda lift, admire great views up at the cross on the edge of Val di Funes (Villnöss), then walk 12 miles (2000 feet up, 5000 feet down) via the steep pass Furcela Forces De Sieles (Forcella Forces de Sielles) to beautiful Vallunga (trail #2 to 16), finishing where you started in Selva. The hike traverses the Geisler/Odle and Puez Groups from verdant pastures to alpine wonders, all preserved in a vast Nature Park: Parco Naturale Puez-Odle (German: Naturpark Puez-Geisler; Ladin: Parch Natural Pöz-Odles). UNESCO honored the Dolomites as a natural World Heritage Site in 2009.

  • Pinnacle Overlook (2440 feet elevation) in Virginia, in Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, rises 1400 feet above the town of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Tristate Peak rises to 1990 feet elevation on the middle right, where the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet, as resolved in 1803. On the far right is the pass of Cumberland Gap (elevation 1600 feet / 488 meters) in the Cumberland Mountains region of the Appalachian Mountains, also known as the Cumberland Water Gap, famous in American history for its role as the chief passageway through the central Appalachians and as an important part of the Wilderness Road. Long used by Native Americans, the path was widened by a team of loggers led by Daniel Boone, making it accessible to pioneers, who used it to journey into the western frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee. The gap was formed by an ancient creek, flowing southward, which cut through the land being pushed up to form the mountains. As the land rose even more, the creek reversed direction flowing into the Cumberland River to the north. Panorama stitched from 3 overlapping photos.

  • Mt. Ritter, Banner Peak, and smoke loom over Garnet Lake in Ansel Adams Wilderness, Inyo National Forest, California, USA. We backpacked for 5 days from Agnew Meadows to Thousand Island Lake, Garnet Lake, Ediza Lake, and Minaret Lake. Smoke drifting from the bad Caldor, Dixie, and other fires frequently smarted our eyes during 3 weeks of hiking in the Eastern Sierra in August of 2021. Then on September 1, most of California's National Forests were unprecedentedly closed for two weeks due to fire risk! Decades of fire exclusion policies, below-normal snow and rainfall, and increasingly hotter summers provides fuel and conditions ripe for forest fires sparked by both lightning and humans. Scientists warn that human-caused climate change has made the U.S. West warmer and drier in the past several decades and will continue to make the weather more extreme and wildfires more destructive.
