  • A cliffside Inca Trail bridge is restored at Machu Picchu, in the Cordillera Vilcabamba, Andes mountains, Peru, South America. The tree-trunk bridge controls the west entrance of Machu Picchu across a drop of 570 meters (1870 feet) to the base of the rock wall. Machu Picchu was built around 1450 AD as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (14381472). Spaniards passed in the river valley below but never discovered Machu Picchu during their conquest of the Incas 1532-1572. The outside world was unaware of the "Lost City of the Incas" until revealed by American historian Hiram Bingham in 1911. Machu Picchu perches at 2430 meters elevation (7970 feet) on a well defended ridge 450 meters (1480 ft) above a loop of the Urubamba/Vilcanota River ( Sacred Valley of the Incas). UNESCO honored the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu on the World Heritage List in 1983.

  • 49 Palms Oasis, vertical panorama, in Joshua Tree National Park, near the City of Twentynine Palms, California, USA. The California fan palm (Washingtonia filifera, in the palm family Arecaceae) is native to the far southwestern United States and Baja California. Today's oasis environment was protected from a drying climate, restricting this cold-tolerant palm to widely separated relict groves. Multiple overlapping photos were stitched to make this panorama.

  • Rainbow Falls. In Watkins Glen, the spellbinding Gorge Trail winds two miles over and under 19 waterfalls of Glen Creek, which descends 400 feet under 200-foot-high cliffs. Watkins Glen State Park is south of Seneca Lake in Schuyler County in the Finger Lakes region New York, USA. The Devonian sedimentary rocks are mostly soft shales, with some layers of harder sandstone and limestone. The vertical panorama was stitched from 12 overlapping photos.

  • The Troll Wall is the tallest vertical rock face in Europe, about 1100 meters (3600 feet) from base to summit. Located within Reinheimen National Park, the Troll Wall (Trollveggen) and Trolltindane (Troll Peaks) soar high above the Romsdalen valley near Åndalsnes, Norway. The gneiss rock summit ridge overhangs its base by nearly 50 meters (160 ft). Parachute BASE jumping from Troll Wall has been illegal since 1986, but climbing the face is allowed, as is hiking up the gentler back. Trollveggen is in Rauma municipality, Møre og Romsdal county. Panorama stitched from 3 overlapping photos.

  • These hexagonal basaltic columns were exposed by glaciers about 20,000 years ago, in Devils Postpile National Monument, near the town of Mammoth Lakes, California, USA. These basaltic columns formed about 90,000 years ago when hot lava dammed behind a moraine. As the lava lake cooled into hard basalt, cracks extending from the top and bottom merged to form vertical columns which were hidden underground until later exposed by grinding glaciers. We hiked from Devils Postpile to Rainbow Falls in a loop for 6 miles with 780 feet gain in Inyo National Forest.

  • The honeycomb weathering on this vertical sandstone wall is a type of tafoni. Hike a classic loop from Little Wild Horse Canyon to Bell Canyon, in the San Rafael Reef, Utah, USA. This great walk (an 8.6-mile circuit with 900 feet gain) is a short drive on a paved road from Goblin Valley State Park. The hike via fascinating narrow slot canyons and open mesas requires some scrambling over rocks, possibly through shallow water holes (which were dry for us on Sept 20, 2020 but wet in April 2006). Thanks to the greatest legislative victory in the history of SUWA (Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance), in 2019, Congress passed the Emery County Public Land Management Act, which declared 663,000 acres of wilderness, including Little Wild Horse Canyon Wilderness, in San Rafael Swell Recreation Area, Utah, USA. The Navajo and Wingate sandstone of the San Rafael Reef was uplifted fifty million years ago into a striking bluff which now runs from Price to Hanksville, bisected by Interstate 70 at a breach fifteen miles west of the town of Green River.

  • In Death Valley National Park, snow-dusted Telescope Peak (11,043 ft) rises high above Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America (282 feet below sea level). Inyo County, California, USA. Millions of visitors have compacted a wide white salt walkway across the brown-dirt-dusted crystal formations. Through concentration by evaporation, Badwater Basin accumulates mostly Sodium Chloride (table salt), plus calcite, gypsum, and borax (famously mined 1883-1889 with Twenty Mule Teams). Cresting the Panamint Range, Telescope Peak has one of the greatest vertical rises above local terrain of any mountain in the contiguous United States. Marmolada (Queen of the Dolomites) is capped by the biggest (and only skiable) glacier in the Dolomiti: Ghiacciaio della Marmolada. Known as Marmoleda in Ladin, the highest peak in the Dolomites rises to 3343 meters (10,968 feet) elevation at Punta Penia. The World War I museum at Serauta lift station describes the amazing City of Ice (Die Eisstadt or Citta di Ghiaccio, 1917), where Austrian soldiers inside the Marmolada Glacier built quarters in tunnels extending 12 kilometers with a vertical drop of over 1000 meters! Nine thousand Austrian and Italian soldiers died on the front line in a stalemate on and around Marmolada over 2 years. After Austria lost World War I, its South Tirol became Italy's Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region (bordering the Veneto). The Dolomites are part of the Southern Limestone Alps, in Europe. UNESCO honored the Dolomites as a natural World Heritage Site in 2009. This panorama was stitched from 8 overlapping photos.
