  • View of larch trees from atop the Panorama Course trail, above our entry hike along Azusa River. The karamatsu, or Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi or Larix leptolepis) is a tree native to Japan, in the mountains of Chubu and Kanto regions in central Honshu. Its needle-like leaves are light glaucous green, turning bright yellow to orange before falling in autumn. The scientific name honours Engelbert Kaempfer. Karasawa cirque is cradled by the Hotaka Mountains, in the "Northern Japan Alps" (Hida Mountains) in Chubu-Sangaku National Park, Japan. Within the cirque, two lodges provide beds and meals for hikers and climbers: Karasawa Goya and Karasawa Hutte. Also known as Mount Hotaka or Hotaka-dake, the Hotaka Mountains reach 3190 meters elevation atop Mount Oku-Hotaka, Japan's third highest peak. About 2000 meters in diameter, the cirque bottoms out at 2300 m elevation. Snow melting here forms the River Azusa which flows through Kamikochi valley below.

  • On the Nydia Track, the yellow blooms of non-native Gorse (Ulex europaeus) invade a non-native plantation of Pinus Radiata trees, on South Island, New Zealand, in the South Pacific. Humans have transformed two thirds of New Zealand by replacing native forests with tree farms (of Pinus radiata; California's Monterey Pine), agriculture, cities, and other developments. Looking on the positive side for wilderness lovers, fully 30% of New Zealand is preserved in parkland, an unusually high amount compared to most other countries. 75% of the country’s plant species are endemic (found nowhere else).

  • Sextet Ridge Glacier and larch trees in the fall at Bugaboo Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. The Bugaboos are a range in the Purcell Mountains, which are a subrange of the Columbia Mountains, which are west of the Rocky Mountain Trench. (Some USA maps label the “Percell Mountains” where their southern limit protrudes into the states of Idaho and Montana.) The igneous Bugaboo intrusion of 135 million years ago cooled into hard crystalline granite and was scraped into spires by glaciers eroding surrounding rock dating from 600 million to 1 billion years ago. Published in "Light Travel: Photography on the Go" book by Tom Dempsey 2009, 2010.

  • The pleasant stone Philosopher's Path follows a canal lined with cherry trees through Higashiyama district in Kyoto, Japan. The 2-kilometer path begins at Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) and ends in Nanzenji neighborhood. A famous Japanese philosopher Nishida Kitaro was said to meditate while walking this route to Kyoto University. This is part of Lake Biwa Canal which tunnels 20 kilometers through the mountains to Lake Biwa in nearby Shiga Prefecture. Built during the Meiji Period to revitalize the stagnating local economy, the canal powered Japan's first hydroelectric power plant.

  • Ancient trees on a Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine was built in homage to Nachi-no-Taki waterfall's kami (spirit god). Don't miss the iconic view of thundering Nachi-no-Taki waterfall (133m, Japan's tallest) paired with Seigantoji pagoda, in Nachikatsuura, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine fuses Buddhist and Shinto influences along the 1000+ year pilgrimage routes of Kumano Kodo. The "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" form an impressive entry on UNESCO's List of World Heritage Sites. Access: by bus from Nachi Station (20 min) or Kii-Katsuura Station (30 min). Ask driver to stop at base of the Daimonzaka trail ("Daimonzaka" stop); or at the entrance to Nachi Waterfall ("Taki-mae"); or at the bus terminus 10 minutes climb below Nachi Shrine ("Nachi-san"). Cars can park at Seigantoji Temple. I recommend this remarkably scenic, short walk (3.5 km with 265 meters gain): starting from Daimon-zaka bus stop, ascend a stone-paved path, humbled by massive evergreens, up to the gates of Nachi Taisha shrine; then descend to the falls, at Taki-mae bus stop.

  • Mt. Sauveur Trail. Acadia Mountain Trail (with loop option via Mt. Sauveur 2.5-4.5 mi RT/700-1300 ft gain) features boulder gardens sprouted with gnarly trees twisted by harsh weather, appearing like a Japanese garden. The trail tops out with good views of Somes Sound and peak fall colors typically in the second week of October, in Acadia National Park, near Bar Harbor, on Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA. Hike granite peaks and enjoy Atlantic coastal scenery. Originally created as Lafayette National Park in 1919, the oldest National Park east of the Mississippi River, it was renamed Acadia in 1929. During the last glacial maximum 21,000 years ago, glaciers measuring up to 9,000 feet thick cut into granite ridges, sculpting the fjord-like Somes Sound.

  • In early spring, leafless trees and desert varnish frame a royal arch in canyon walls along Lower Calf Creek Falls trail in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah, USA. Manganese-rich desert varnish requires thousands of years to coat a rock face that is protected from precipitation and wind erosion. The varnish likely originates from airborne dust and external surface runoff, including: clay minerals, oxides and hydroxides of manganese (Mn) and/or iron (Fe), sand grains, trace elements, and usually organic matter. Streaks of black varnish often occur where water cascades over cliffs, but wind doesn't sculpt its shape. Varnish color varies from shades of brown to black. Manganese-poor, iron-rich varnishes are red to orange, and intermediate concentrations are shaded brown. Manganese-oxidizing microbes may explain the unusually high concentration of manganese in black desert varnish, which can be smooth and shiny where densest. Hike Lower Calf Creek Falls trail 6 miles round trip (600 feet gain). Directions: From the town of Escalante, drive 15 miles east on Scenic Byway 12 to Calf Creek Recreation Area day-use parking and campground.

  • Acadia Mountain Trail features boulder gardens sprouted with gnarly trees twisted by harsh weather, appearing like a Japanese garden. The panorama was stitched from 6 overlapping photos.

  • A path ascends beneath tall trees in winter, Ravenna Park, Seattle, Washington, USA. Cowen and Ravenna Park were formed when melt-off from the Vashon Glacial Ice Sheet formed Lake Russell and cut drainage ravines through new glacial fill. Lake Russell disappeared when the Ice Sheet retreated north of the Straits of Juan de Fuca, but various features remained, including the Green Lake drainage basin, which continued to empty through the Ravenna ravine into Lake Washington. The deeper pockets of the basin became Bitter, Haller and Green Lakes. Many creeks and brooks and springs fed into Green Lake, whose outlet was on the east side of the route of Ravenna Boulevard, in a deepening ravine which became Cowen and Ravenna parks.
