Meteora (which means "suspended in the air") is a complex of six Eastern Orthodox Christian monasteries built by medieval monks on natural rock pillars near Kalambaka, in central Greece, Europe. The sandstone and conglomerate of Meteora were formed in the cone of a river delta estuary emerging into a sea about 60 million years ago, then later uplifted and eroded into pinnacles. The isolated monasteries of Meteora helped keep alive Greek Orthodox religious traditions and Hellenic culture during the turbulent Middle Ages and Ottoman Turk occupation of Greece (1453-1829). UNESCO honored Meteora as a World Heritage Site in 1988. Visit early in the morning and in the off season to avoid crowds.

  • In Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, see Pierce Island in Columbia River from Beacon Rock State Park, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest, USA. The Columbia River cuts its gorge over 80 miles (130 km) westwards through the Cascade Range, with mountain walls reaching 4000 feet high (1200 meters). The gorge begins near the Deschutes River confluence with the Columbia and extends to the eastern Portland metropolitan area. The canyon connects the Columbia River Plateau with the Pacific Ocean, providing the only navigable route through the Cascades and defining the border between Washington and Oregon. The federally protected Gorge is managed by the US Forest Service. Beacon Rock is a striking monolith composed of basalt, 848 feet high (258 meters). In 1805, Lewis and Clark originally referred to it as Beaten Rock, later as Beacon Rock. They found that Beacon Rock marked the eastern-most tidal influence in the Columbia. It was later known as Castle Rock until 1915 when its name changed back to Beacon Rock. The panorama was stitched from 17 overlapping images.   • The Wave, Coyote Buttes, located on the Arizona side of Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area, which is public land managed by the United States BLM. Over 190 million years, ancient sand dune layers calcified into rock and created "The Wave." Iron oxides bled through this Jurassic-age Navajo sandstone to create the salmon color. Hematite and goethite added yellows, oranges, browns and purples. Over thousands of years, water cut through the ridge above and exposed a channel that was further scoured by windblown sand into the smooth curves that today look like ocean swells and waves. For the permit required to hike to "The Wave", contact the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM), who limits access to protect this fragile geologic formation.

  • The Moses H. Cone Memorial Park (or Cone Park) is a country estate in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 294. The park is run by the National Park Service and is open to the public. It contains 3500 acres, a 16 acre trout lake, a 22 acre bass lake, and 25 miles of carriage trails for hiking and horses. The main feature of the park is a twenty-three room 13,000 square foot mansion called Flat Top Manor built about 1900. At the Manor there is a Craft Shop and demonstration center,  along with an information desk and book store. The park is open year-round and sees 225,000 people each year, the most visited recreational place on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

  • Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona: The Heart of the Rocks Loop Trail (7 to 9 miles) makes a perfect day hike through the hoodoos here. 27 million years ago, huge volcanic eruptions laid down 2000 feet of ash and pumice in this area, which fused into a rock known as rhyolitic tuff.  Since then this rock has eroded into fascinating hoodoos, spires, and balanced rocks which lie above the surrounding desert grasslands at elevations between 5100 and 7800 feet. At Chiricahua, the Sonoran desert meets the Chihuahuan desert, and the Rocky Mountains meet Mexico's Sierra Madre, making one of the most biologically diverse areas in the northern hemisphere. While we drove the dirt road to nearby Portal, Arizona, Carol saw a mountain lion crossing the road! Other animals here include javelina, coatimundi, bears, skunks, and deer.   • The Wave, Coyote Buttes, located on the Arizona side of Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area, which is public land managed by the United States BLM. Over 190 million years, ancient sand dune layers calcified into rock and created "The Wave." Iron oxides bled through this Jurassic-age Navajo sandstone to create the salmon color. Hematite and goethite added yellows, oranges, browns and purples. Over thousands of years, water cut through the ridge above and exposed a channel that was further scoured by windblown sand into the smooth curves that today look like ocean swells and waves. For the permit required to hike to "The Wave", contact the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM), who limits access to protect this fragile geologic formation.   • The Putangirua Pinnacles were featured as the Dimholt Road in the "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" motion picture. When ocean levels were much higher 7 to 9 million years ago, the Aorangi Ranges were an island which deposited large alluvial fans at the seashore. Conglomerate rock formed in layers. Erosion over the past several thousand years created a badlands of earth pillars (or hoodoos) at the head of this valley in the Aorangi Ranges.

  • A mountain goat rests at Hidden Lake by Bearhat Mountain in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. The mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus, or Rocky Mountain Goat) is a large-hoofed mammal found only in North America. It is an even-toed ungulate in the family Bovidae, in subfamily Caprinae (goat-antelopes), in the Oreamnos genus, but is NOT a true "goat" (or Capra genus). Since 1932, Canada and USA have shared Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, which UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site (1995) containing two Biosphere Reserves (1976). Rocks in the park are primarily sedimentary layers deposited in shallow seas over 1.6 billion to 800 million years ago. During the tectonic formation of the Rocky Mountains 170 million years ago, the Lewis Overthrust displaced these old rocks over newer Cretaceous age rocks. Glaciers carved spectacular U-shaped valleys and pyramidal peaks as recently as the Last Glacial Maximum (the last "Ice Age" 25,000 to 13,000 years ago). Of the 150 glaciers existing in the mid 1800s, only 25 active glaciers remain in the park as of 2010, and all may disappear as soon as 2020, say climate scientists.

  • Tourists explore a restored Inca stone corridor at Machu Picchu, a magnificent archeological site in the Cordillera Vilcabamba, Andes mountains, Peru, South America. Machu Picchu was built around 1450 AD as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (14381472). Spaniards passed in the river valley below but never discovered Machu Picchu during their conquest of the Incas 1532-1572. The outside world was unaware of the "Lost City of the Incas" until revealed by American historian Hiram Bingham in 1911. Machu Picchu perches at 2430 meters elevation (7970 feet) on a well defended ridge 450 meters (1480 ft) above a loop of the Urubamba/Vilcanota River ( Sacred Valley of the Incas). UNESCO honored the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu on the World Heritage List in 1983.

  • Standing within the Old Temple built 3,000 years ago at Chavin de Huantar archeological site, the mysterious Lanzon de Chavin obelisk is one of the most impressive monuments of early advanced Andean civilization. Chavin de Huantar is in the northern Andean highlands of Peru, South America. The knife-shaped Lanzon sacred stone sculpture, statue, or stela is artfully carved from white granite in a roughly lance-like shape 4.5 meters (15 feet) high. It depicts a human-feline hybrid with claws, writhing snakes for hair and eyebrows, fangs curved sideways in a smile (thus the nickname 'Smiling God'), and one arm raised while the other is lowered. The Lanzon de Chavin is variously interpreted as a principal deity of Chavin, as an oracle with the power to speak (through a hole in the roof of the chamber), or as a symbol of trade, fertility, dualism, or humankind's interaction with nature, or any combination of these. The major structures of Chavin de Huantar were built over many stages starting prior to 1200 BC and mostly finished by 750 BC. Religious ceremonial use ended by 500-400 BC, after which the Huaraz culture settled in. The sophisticated temple builders imported white granite and black limestone from distant quarries and demonstrated advanced skills in organization, drainage, acoustics, temperature control, metallurgy, and soldering. Chavin de Huantar is east of the Cordillera Blanca at 3180 meters elevation (10,430 ft) at the head of Conchucos Valley, a long day trip by car from Huaraz. The major pre-Inca culture of Chavín created the first widespread, recognizable artistic style in the Andes during their advanced civilization from 900 BC to 200 BC, and extended their influence to other receptive civilizations along the coast. The Chavín were based in the Mosna Valley where the Mosna and Huachecsa rivers merge, within the quechua, jalca, and puna life zones. UNESCO honored Chavin Archaeological Site on the World Heritage List in 1985.

  • The Erechtheion (left) and Parthenon (right) are lit at night atop the Acropolis, in Athens, Greece, Europe. The Parthenon was first built from 447-438 BC, using Pentelic marble plus a wooden roof. The Parthenon is the largest Doric-column temple ever completed in Greece. It was designed as a treasury for tribute money moved from Delos Island and was dedicated to the worship of Athena. A huge, 12-meter tall statue of Athina Polias was placed in 432 BC. The Erechtheion, built entirely of marble in 421-406 BC, is the most sacred sanctuary on the Acropolis. The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments were honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

  • South Pacific Ocean waves released the spherical Moeraki Boulders onto Koekohe Beach, between Moeraki and Hampden on the Otago coast, South Island, New Zealand. These ancient concretions grew 2 meters (6 feet) in diameter over 4 to 5.5 million years from marine mud (Moeraki Formation mudstone) near the surface of the Paleocene sea floor.  After the concretions formed, large cracks (septaria) formed and filled with brown calcite, yellow calcite, and small amounts of dolomite and quartz when a drop in sea level allowed fresh groundwater to flow through the enclosing mudstone.

  • South Pacific Ocean waves released the spherical Moeraki Boulders onto Koekohe Beach, between Moeraki and Hampden on the Otago coast, South Island, New Zealand. These ancient concretions grew 2 meters (6 feet) in diameter over 4 to 5.5 million years from marine mud (Moeraki Formation mudstone) near the surface of the Paleocene sea floor.  After the concretions formed, large cracks (septaria) formed and filled with brown calcite, yellow calcite, and small amounts of dolomite and quartz when a drop in sea level allowed fresh groundwater to flow through the enclosing mudstone.
