  • Washington map of major parks, cities, roads, geography. USA.
    Washington-map.jpg
  • John Mitchell’s 1775 map shows the British colonies in North America extending indefinitely west, overriding rival French claims. First published in 1755, the map's pro-English interpretation of boundaries and geography served as a political tool (propaganda) during the French and Indian War (1754–1763, part of the global Seven Years' War). Mitchell’s important map guided the Treaty of Paris peace negotiations between Great Britain and her former American colonies in 1783 and helped resolve many later treaty negotiations and boundary disputes as recently as 1932 for the United States (USA). Thomas Jefferson recommended that Nicholas King use Mitchell’s map in preparing a new map for Meriwether Lewis, saying: “it was made with great care we know from what is laid down in those western parts with which we have lately become acquainted.” Notice how British Colonial claims of Virginia, Georgia, North and South Carolina extend beyond the Mississippi towards the Pacific Ocean, and Virginia spreads north into present-day Michigan. See the map at the Governor's Palace tour at Colonial Williamsburg, the historic district of Williamsburg (colonial Virginia's capital from 1699 to 1780). Map title for this 1775 version (the fourth edition): "A Map of the British Colonies in North America with the Roads, Distances, Limits, and extent of the Settlements, Humbly Inscribed to the Right Honourable the Earl of Halifax, and the other Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners for Trade & Plantations by Their Lordships most obliged and very humble servant, John Mitchell."

  • 1823 map (copy) of 24 US states, at The Alamo, San Antonio, Texas, USA. Caption: "By 1820, the United States was composed of twenty-four individual states, twelve that allowed slavery and twelve that did not. John Melish, Map of the United States with the Contiquous British and Spanish Possessions. 1823. ... Tobin Map Collection, courtesy of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library." The Alamo Mission in San Antonio (or "The Alamo") was originally known as Mission San Antonio de Valero, a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, and the site of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. It is now a museum in the Alamo Plaza District of Downtown San Antonio, Texas, USA.

  • Map of Santorini Island, Aegean Sea, Greece, Europe. Geologic and human history of Santorini: Humans first arrived around 3000 BC on this volcano known in ancient times as Thira (or Thera). The island was a volcanic cone with a circular shoreline until 1646 BC, when one of earths most violent explosions blasted ash all over the Mediterranean, sunk the center of the island, launched tidal waves, and may have ruined the Minoan civilization 70 miles away on Crete. Remarkably, volcanic ash dumped onto the volcanos flanks actually preserved the village of Akrotiri and its 3600-year-old frescoes from the Minoan era. These are some of the earliest known examples of world art history, which you can now view in museums. In 286 BC, the volcano split off Thirasia (Little Thira) Island (to the West). The volcano began rebuilding, and in 197 BC the small center islet of Palia Kameni appeared. In 1707 CE, lava started forming Nea Kameni, the larger center island which erupted as recently as 1956 and caused a huge earthquake (7.8 on the Richter scale) which destroyed most of the houses in the towns of Fira and Oia. Fira and Oia have since been rebuilt as multi-level mazes of fascinating whitewashed architecture, attracting tourists from around the world.

  • A map of North and South America shows our flight from Seattle 7000 miles (through Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas) to Buenos Aires, taking 15 hours in the air. Argentina is plus 5 hours jet lag from Pacific Standard Time (West Coast, USA). Our adventure travel in Argentina and Chile lasted from February 3 to March 11, 2005. We flew 1500 miles from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, on the Argentina side of the island archipelago of Tierra del Fuego. We cruised 12 days round trip through the Beagle Channel and across the rough 400-mile Drake Passage to explore the frozen Antarctic Peninsula. A short airplane flight took us from Ushuaia to working-class Punta Arenas in Chile, where a hired van drove us to the tourist town of Puerto Natales. We hiked the W Route to admire striking mountain scenery in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile. We bused into Argentina to the bustling tourist town of El Calafate, where day rental of a car let us visit the spectacular Moreno Glacier on our own schedule. A bus took us to the fun frontier village of El Chalten where several day hikes explored the awesome Mount Fitz Roy area. A flight from El Calafate returned to Buenos Aires. In Chile, Patagonia includes the territory of Valdivia through Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Spanning both Argentina and Chile, the foot of South America is known as Patagonia, a name derived from coastal giants ("Patagão" or "Patagoni" who were actually Tehuelche native people who averaged 25 cm taller than the Spaniards) who were reported by Magellan's 1520s voyage circumnavigating the world.

  • This map of the Chesapeake Bay area shows Jamestown Island and Williamsburg to be only about 8 miles apart. Working on behalf of the London entrepreneurs of The Virginia Company, Captain John Smith played a pivotal role in establishing the tiny, struggling settlement of Jamestown, the first successful English colony in North America. Using just an oversized rowboat with a single canvas sail, Captain John Smith and his crew surveyed 3000 miles of Chesapeake Bay and tributaries in 1607-1609 while searching for food desperately needed by the colony. They thoroughly explored the area and parlayed with and sometimes battled with the Chesapeake 's diverse Native peoples. Located in James City County when it was formed in 1634 as one of the original eight shires of Virginia, Jamestown was the capital of the Colony for 83 years, from 1616 until 1698. In 1698, the capital was relocated to Middle Plantation, about 8 miles (13 km) distant, a small community which was already home to the new College of William and Mary in 1693 and was renamed Williamsburg in 1699.

  • Sunset rays highlight a lone tree in the Blue Ridge Mountains along Skyline Drive, a National Scenic Byway which runs 105 miles (169 km) along the ridge of long and narrow Shenandoah National Park, in Virginia, USA. To the west is the broad Shenandoah Valley. The south end of Skyline Drive connects with the Blue Ridge Parkway, a 469-mile (755 km) long scenic highway that ends in North Carolina at the east entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (which spans into Tennessee). The Blue Ridge Mountains are a physiographic province of the larger Appalachians (see map). Trees release a haze of hydrocarbon gases which selectively backscatter blue light, the name source for the Blue Ridge Mountains. Shenandoah NP was authorized in 1926 and fully established on December 26, 1935. Almost 40% of its land has been designated as Wilderness, protected as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Panorama stitched from 3 overlapping photos.

  • 1893 Heceta Head Lightstation, at Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, on the Oregon coast, USA. Here, the Siuslaw Indians traditionally hunted sea lions and gathered sea bird eggs from offshore rocks. While seeking to extend Spanish hegemony in the late 1700s, Spanish explorer Bruno de Heceta mapped the mouth of the Columbia River and much more along the Pacific Northwest coast; and in 1862, the US Coast Survey named Heceta Head in his honor. Built atop a 56-foot tower in 1893, this Lightstation's coastal safety beacon was first illuminated in 1894. Perched 205 feet above the ocean, its fresnel lens focuses the brightest light on the Oregon coast, visible up to 21 miles out to sea. Heceta Head is found halfway between Yachats and Florence (2.1 miles south of Carl Washburne State Park). From the large parking lot, walk 1 mile round trip to the Lighthouse. (Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint was created in the 1990s by combining Heceta Head State Park with the former Devils Elbow State Park at the scenic cove at the mouth of Cape Creek.)
