  • Holiday lights decorate the Keepers' House, at Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, 14 miles south of Yachats on the Oregon coast, USA. Since 1995, the Keepers' House has been operated by the Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast, a concessionaire of the U.S. Forest Service. Built in 1893, the Heceta Head Light and Keepers Quarters were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 for architectural and engineering significance. The site originally included farm buildings and the single-family head lighthouse keeper's house, which was demolished in 1940 and had been similar to the remaining house shown here. Due to electrification, the head lighthouse keeper was no longer needed, and the original house was sold for $10, dismantled for its lumber, and used to build Alpha Bit bookstore-cafe in Mapleton, still standing today. The remaining keepers' house was a duplex that housed the first and second assistant lighthouse keepers and their families. After the beacon was automated in 1963, the last keepers moved away. From 1970 to 1995, the U.S. Forest Service leased the Keepers' House to Lane Community College for use as a satellite campus. The porch of the Queen Anne-style house was restored in 1981. (Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint was created in the 1990s by combining Heceta Head State Park with the former Devils Elbow State Park at the scenic cove at the mouth of Cape Creek.)

  • Sunset dramatically lights pinnacles above Green River Lakes, in the Wind River Range, Bridger-Teton National Forest, Rocky Mountains, Wyoming, USA. The Continental Divide follows the crest of the "Winds". Mostly composed of granite batholiths formed deep within the earth over 1 billion years ago, the Wind River Range is one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America. These granite monoliths were uplifted, exposed by erosion, then carved by glaciers 500,000 years ago to form cirques and U-shaped valleys. Glaciers scoured the terminal moraine which naturally dams the Green River Lakes, the headwaters of the Green River (chief tributary to the Colorado River).

  • Lights of Inverness reflect in River Ness at twilight, seen from Friars' Bridge, in Scotland, United Kingdom, Europe. Inverness is the administrative capital of the Highlands. A settlement was established here by the 500s AD with the first royal charter being granted by King David I in the 1100s. The Gaelic king Mac Bethad Mac Findláich (MacBeth) whose 11th-century killing of King Duncan was immortalised in Shakespeare's largely fictionalized play Macbeth, held a castle within the city where he ruled as Mormaer of Moray and Ross. Inverness lies near two important battle sites: the 11th-century battle of Blàr nam Fèinne against Norway which took place on The Aird and the 18th-century Battle of Culloden which took place on Culloden Moor. Inverness means "Mouth of the River Ness" in Scottish Gaelic. Surveys place it as one of the happiest places in the UK.

  • Lights of Inverness reflect in River Ness at twilight, seen from Friars' Bridge, in Scotland, United Kingdom, Europe. Inverness is the administrative capital of the Highlands. The red sandstone Inverness Castle was built in 1836 by architect William Burn on the site of an 11th-century fort. Today, it houses Inverness Sheriff Court. • At dawn, lights reflect in the Beagle Channel at the Port of Ushuaia, capital city of Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina, South America. As the port closest to Antarctica (which is located 400 miles across the Drake Passage), Ushuaia hosts most of the cruise ships that visit the southernmost continent. Argentina claims Ushuaia is the "southernmost city in the world" (although the smaller Chilean town of Puerto Williams lies further south). The Martial Mountains provide skiing and hiking above town. Panorama was stitched from 3 overlapping photos.

  • Sunrise strikes a cliff above the narrow slot of Little Wild Horse Canyon. San Rafael Swell Recreation Area, Utah, USA. Hike a classic loop from Little Wild Horse Canyon to Bell Canyon, in the San Rafael Reef. This great walk (an 8.6-mile circuit with 900 feet gain) is a short drive on a paved road from Goblin Valley State Park. The hike via fascinating narrow slot canyons and open mesas requires some scrambling over rocks, possibly through shallow water holes (which were dry for us on Sept 20, 2020 but wet in April 2006). Thanks to the greatest legislative victory in the history of SUWA (Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance), in 2019, Congress passed the Emery County Public Land Management Act, which declared 663,000 acres of wilderness, including Little Wild Horse Canyon Wilderness, in San Rafael Swell Recreation Area, Utah, USA. The Navajo and Wingate sandstone of the San Rafael Reef was uplifted fifty million years ago into a striking bluff which now runs from Price to Hanksville, bisected by Interstate 70 at a breach fifteen miles west of the town of Green River.

  • Nature expert and sculptor R.T. "Skip" Wallen created "Tahku", an impressive 6.5-ton, 25-foot tall breaching humpback whale statue with fountains and lights, completed in 2018 in Overstreet Park along the Seawalk near Juneau-Douglas Bridge, in Juneau, Alaska, USA. Tahku celebrates 50 years of Alaska statehood 1959-2009. The City and Borough of Juneau is the capital city of Alaska and the second largest city in the USA by area (only Sitka is larger). This unified municipality lies on Gastineau Channel in the Alaskan panhandle. Juneau has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of what was the District of Alaska was moved from Sitka. The city is named after a gold prospector from Quebec, Joe Juneau. Isolated by rugged terrain on Alaska's mainland, Juneau can only be reached by plane or boat. Downtown Juneau sits at sea level under steep mountains up to 4000 feet high, topped by Juneau Icefield and 30 glaciers.

  • A sphinx moth (or hawk moth, Sphingidae family, order Lepidoptera) is attracted to night lights in Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, near Quito, Ecuador, South America. Sphingidae is best represented in the tropics but species inhabit every region. Sphingidae are moderate to large in size and are distinguished among moths for their rapid, sustained flying ability, assisted by narrow wings and streamlined abdomen. Some hawk moths, like the hummingbird hawk moth, hover in midair while they feed on nectar from flowers and are sometimes mistaken for hummingbirds. This hovering capability has evolved only three times in nectar feeders: in hummingbirds, certain bats, and these sphingids. Sphingids can swing hover (move rapidly from side to side while hovering). Some of the sphingids are some of the fastest flying insects, capable of flying at over 50 km/h (30 miles per hour). They have a wingspan of 35-150 mm.

  • A rhinoceros beetle is attracted by night lights in Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, near Quito, Ecuador, South America. The rhinoceros beetles or rhino beetle are a subfamily (Dynastinae) of beetles in the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae). Among the largest of beetles, their common name refers to the characteristic horns borne by the males of most species in the group. The males use their horns in mating battles against other males. Their larval stage is long, several years in some species. The larvae feed on rotten wood while the adults feed on nectar, plant sap and fruit. Rhinoceros beetle larvae are sometimes fried and eaten as a bush delicacy. Rhinoceros beetles are popular pets in Asia. They are clean, easy to maintain, and safe to handle. In Asian countries, male beetles are also used for gambling fights since they naturally compete for female beetles with the winner knocking the other off a log. Rhinoceros beetles are also the strongest animals on the planet in relation to their own size. They can lift up to 850 times their own weight.

  • Assateague Light House was rebuilt 1867 in Virginia, USA. Assateague Light is 142 feet tall (43 m), located on the southern end of Assateague Island off the coast of the Virginia Eastern Shore. Reach it by road from Chincoteague Island via a bridge over Assateague Channel within the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Assateague Light is owned and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard and is still used as an active aid in navigation. The keeper's quarters are used as seasonal housing for refuge temporary employees, volunteers, and interns. Constructed in 1867 to replace a shorter lighthouse (45-feet-tall) built in 1833, the lighthouse is conical in shape and is painted in alternating bands of red and white.

  • Sunrise light shines on the red-orange sandstone of Skyline Arch at Devils Garden Campground, Arches National Park, Moab, Utah, USA. This image was stitched from multiple overlapping photos. A thick underground salt bed underlies the creation of the park's many arches, spires, balanced rocks, sandstone fins, and eroded monoliths. Some 300 million years ago, a sea flowed into the area and eventually evaporated to create the salt bed up to thousands of feet thick. Over millions of years, the salt bed was covered with debris eroded from the Uncompahgre Uplift to the northeast. During the Early Jurassic (about 210 million years ago) desert conditions deposited the vast Navajo Sandstone. On top of that, about 140 million years ago, the Entrada Sandstone was deposited from stream and windblown sediments. Later, over 5000 feet (1500 m) of younger sediments were deposited and then mostly worn away, leaving the park's arches eroded mostly within the Entrada formation.

  • Evening light on whitewashed houses in Fira, Santorini Island, GREECE. The town of Fira perches on 700-foot-high volcanic cliffs on Santorini Island to escape summer heat and pirates of the past. Geologic and human history of Santorini: Humans first arrived around 3000 BC on this volcano known in ancient times as Thira (or Thera). The island was a volcanic cone with a circular shoreline until 1646 BC, when one of earths most violent explosions blasted ash all over the Mediterranean, sunk the center of the island, launched tidal waves, and may have ruined the Minoan civilization 70 miles away on Crete. Remarkably, volcanic ash dumped onto the volcanos flanks actually preserved the village of Akrotiri and its 3600-year-old frescoes from the Minoan era. These are some of the earliest known examples of world art history, which you can now view in museums. In 286 BC, the volcano split off Thirasia (Little Thira) Island (to the West). The volcano began rebuilding, and in 197 BC the small center islet of Palia Kameni appeared. In 1707 CE, lava started forming Nea Kameni, the larger center island which erupted as recently as 1956 and caused a huge earthquake (7.8 on the Richter scale) which destroyed most of the houses in the towns of Fira and Oia. Fira and Oia have since been rebuilt as multi-level mazes of fascinating whitewashed architecture, attracting tourists from around the world. Published in September/October 2005 Sierra Magazine, Sierra Club Outings.

  • Sunrise light hits Going-to-the-Sun Mountain and Little Chief Mountain in the Lewis Range above Saint Mary Lake (4484 feet / 1367 meters elevation) in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. The Going-to-the-Sun Road runs along the north shore. Here the great plains end and the Rocky Mountains abruptly rise 5000 feet above the lake. Since 1932, Canada and USA have shared Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, which UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site (1995) containing two Biosphere Reserves (1976). Rocks in the park are primarily sedimentary layers deposited in shallow seas over 1.6 billion to 800 million years ago. During the tectonic formation of the Rocky Mountains 170 million years ago, the Lewis Overthrust displaced these old rocks over newer Cretaceous age rocks. Glaciers carved spectacular U-shaped valleys and pyramidal peaks as recently as the Last Glacial Maximum (the last "Ice Age" 25,000 to 13,000 years ago). Of the 150 glaciers existing in the mid 1800s, only 25 active glaciers remain in the park as of 2010, and all may disappear by 2020, say climate scientists. • Sunset light illuminates colorful orange, pink, yellow, and white sandstone in White Domes area of Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, USA. Starting more than 150 million years ago, great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs were compressed, uplifting, faulted, and eroded to form the park's fiery red sandstone formations. The park also boasts fascinating patterns in limestone, shale, and conglomerate rock. The park adjoins Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the Virgin River confluence, at an elevation of 2000 to 2600 feet (610-790 m), 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas, USA. Park entry from Interstate 15 passes through the Moapa Indian Reservation.
