  • "Helmets Recommended" for bicyclists sign in Cades Cove, an isolated valley located in the East Tennessee section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA. Cades Cove was once home to numerous settlers. Today Cades Cove is the most popular destination for visitors to the park, attracting over two million visitors a year, due to its well preserved homesteads, scenic mountain views, and abundant display of wildlife. Cades Cove is a type of valley known as a "limestone window," created by erosion that removed the older Precambrian sandstone, exposing the younger Paleozoic limestone beneath. The weathering of the limestone produced deep, fertile soil, making Cades Cove attractive to early farmers. More weather-resistant formations, such as the Cades sandstone which comprises Rich Mountain to the north and the Elkmont and Thunderhead sandstones which comprise the Smokies crest to the south have surrounded the cove, leaving it relatively isolated within the Great Smokies.

  • Bicycle campers walk by the medieval church in the main square of Bolzano, Walther Square, in the Dolomites, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol (South Tyrol) region of Italy, Europe. Bolzano's Assumption of Our Lady Cathedral was started in 1184 in Romanesque style and expanded by 1382 using Gothic architecture. The steeple was completed in 1517. An 1889 monument in the center of Walther Square honors Walther von der Vogelweide, a great poet and bard who lived circa 1168-1228. Bolzano is the biggest city in South Tyrol, which is an autonomous province with a special statute which preserves the rights of the German-speaking minority in Italy. Bolzano has been voted as one of the most liveable of 100+ Italian cities. I'm not surprised, as several pedestrian-only streets downtown had a wonderfully vibrant ambiance (once you park and get out of the stressful spaghetti of auto traffic).

  • Bicyclists pedal through a barren black landscape on emergency road/Highway 130 towards lava which enters the ocean in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, near Kalapana, Hawaii, USA. A sign reads "NO SHOULDER. 25 MPH." On Kilauea volcano's south flank, Pu'u O'o crater has been erupting continuously since 1983, making it the world's longest-lived rift-zone (flank) eruption of the last 200 years. The eruption has consumed 189 buildings and 8.7 miles of highway. Since 1987, the coastal highway has been closed, buried under lava up to 115 feet thick. After June 30, 2016, the County of Hawaii opened a section of the emergency road/Highway 130 to lava viewing (8 miles round trip, open 3pm-9pm), limiting vehicles to bicycles (rented at the roadblock in Kalapana for $15+ for 3 hours), local residents' cars, and emergency vehicles. See updates at: USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov and www.hawaiicounty.gov/lava-viewing/. Kilauea is between 300,000 and 600,000 years old and emerged above sea level about 100,000 years ago.

  • Walk or bike along an idyllic path in Selva di Val Gardena village beneath Langkofel/Sassolungo peak on your way to Vallunga, in the Dolomites, South Tyrol, Italy, Europe. The beautiful ski resort of Selva di Val Gardena (German: Wolkenstein in Gröden; Ladin: Sëlva Gherdëine) makes a great hiking base in the Dolomites, in the South Tyrol region (Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol) of Italy, Europe. For our favorite hike in the Dolomiti, start from Selva with the first morning bus to Ortisei, take the Seceda lift, admire great views up at the cross on the edge of Val di Funes (Villnöss), then walk 12 miles (2000 feet up, 5000 feet down) via the steep pass Furcela Forces De Sieles (Forcella Forces de Sielles) to beautiful Vallunga (trail #2 to 16), finishing where you started in Selva. The hike traverses the Geisler/Odle and Puez Groups from verdant pastures to alpine wonders, all preserved in a vast Nature Park: Parco Naturale Puez-Odle (German: Naturpark Puez-Geisler; Ladin: Parch Natural Pöz-Odles). UNESCO honored the Dolomites as a natural World Heritage Site in 2009.

  • Bicycles near Waldspitz above Grindelwald, in Switzerland, Europe. From Grindelwald, we took the First gondola to Bort, then hiked via First to Berghotel Faulhorn (6 miles with 3650 feet ascent, 130 ft descent) to stay for an impressive sunset and sunrisee. (Or save effort by starting at First instead of Bort.) Berghotel Faulhorn was built in 1830, one of the oldest mountain hotels in the Alps. Earplugs are recommended for sleeping, as the old walls are thin. Perched on a remote precipice, Berghotel Faulhorn has flush toilets, but no drinking-water supply, nor guest showers. To save money, carry extra liters of drinking water from Grindelwald. In 2022, Berghotel Faulhorn charged 4 CHF per liter for hikers' tea, and 12 CHF per 1.5-liter bottle of drinking water. The hut's roof-gathered water is undrinkable (and our squeeze-filter didn't remove the bad taste). For personal hygiene, cold water is provided in the dormitory washroom, and the private rooms have nostalgic water jugs and bowls.

  • The 1931 RGS Motor 1 (replica shown here built in 2000) was the precursor of the popular Galloping Goose, a gasoline-engine railbus. The RGS Motor 1 carried US Mail, express freight, and passengers from 1931-1933 for the Rio Grande Southern (RGS) Railroad, a narrow gauge (3 ft wide) which ran from Durango to Ridgway (until 1953). In October 1933, its great success caused the original RGS Motor 1 to be scrapped for parts and converted to enlarged versions, seven of which would become the "Galloping Geese" railcars which officially operated under that name in 1950-1951. • Glowing lava exits a lava tube, jets into the ocean, and explodes at Kamokuna, enlarging the Big Island, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, just west of Kalapana, Hawaii, USA, on February 1, 2017. On Kilauea volcano's south flank, Pu'u O'o crater has been erupting continuously since 1983, making it the world's longest-lived rift-zone (flank) eruption of the last 200 years.

Views of the Geisler/Odle Group and a church in St. Magdalena (Santa Maddalena) village are iconic of the Dolomites mountains. See the valley and municipality of Funes (Villnöss) in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol (South Tyrol), Italy. Enjoy great hiking here in the vast Nature Park of Parco Naturale Puez-Odle (German: Naturpark Puez-Geisler; Ladin: Parch Natural Pöz-Odles). The Dolomites are part of the Southern Limestone Alps, Europe. UNESCO honored the Dolomites as a natural World Heritage Site in 2009.
