  • The Patagonian toad is also called the Eden Harbour toad (Nannophryne variegata, in the family Bufonidae). Photographed on the trail to Huemul Lake, near El Chalten. The Patagonian toad is found in southern Argentina (from Neuquén southwards) and Chile. A short, steep, attractive hike leads to Huemul Lake and Glacier (4 km round trip with 215 m gain) on private land. Pay the trail entrance fee at the campground at Estancia Lago Del Desierto. Directions: drive north from El Chalten for 35 km on gravel road RP23, leaving the national park, to reach Punta Sur of Lago del Desierto, in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, Patagonia, South America.

  • The American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is an aquatic frog, a member of the family Ranidae, or "true frogs". Photographed in the Vancouver Aquarium, 845 Avison Way, Vancouver, British Columbia, V6G 3E2, CANADA. (Formerly classified as Rana catesbeiana, this species has been reclassified to Lithobates due to paraphyly/branching in its Ranidae family.) This frog has an olive green back and sides blotched with brownish markings and a whitish belly spotted with yellow or grey. The upper lip is often bright green and males have yellow throats. The bullfrog is harvested as food (frog legs) in North America, where it is the largest native frog. This frog is endemic to southern and eastern parts of the United States and Canada, but has been widely introduced across other parts of North, Central and South America, Western Europe, and parts of Asia where it is often regarded as an invasive species. Bullfrogs are used in biology classes in schools for dissection and are sometimes kept as pets, which is not recommended.

  • In 2009, American sculptor Charles Ray (born 1953) installed "Boy with Frog" at the Punta della Dogana on Giudecca island, sestiere of Dorsoduro, Venice, Italy, Europe. The white eight-foot-tall sculpture depicts a boy holding a large frog above Giudecca Canal. (The sculpture calls to mind the Apollo Sauroktonos, an ancient Roman sculpture at the Musée du Louvre in Paris of a nude adolescent reaching out his arm to catch a lizard climbing a tree.) Venice (Venezia) is the capital of Italy's Veneto region, named for the ancient Veneti people from the 10th century BC. The romantic "City of Canals" stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea Europe.
