  • A ferry cruises by a waterfall on Geirangerfjord, the epitome of Norwegian fjords. Geirangerfjorden (the Geiranger fjord) is a stunningly beautiful 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) long branch of Storfjord (Great Fjord, the fifth longest in Norway). Geirangerfjord is one of Norway's most visited tourist sites and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Take the car ferry for an impressive sightseeing trip between Geiranger and Hellesylt, in Stranda municipality, Sunnmøre region, Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. Published on the cover of Wells Fargo Lifescapes magazine August 2012. Published in "Light Travel: Photography on the Go" book by Tom Dempsey 2009, 2010.

  • A purple flower of Aconitum genus (aka aconite, monkshood, wolf's-bane, in the family Ranunculaceae) at Bachalpsee. From Grindelwald, we took the First gondola to Bort, then hiked via First to Berghotel Faulhorn (6 miles with 3650 feet ascent, 130 ft descent) to stay for an impressive sunset and sunrise, in Switzerland, Europe. (Or save effort by starting at First instead of Bort.) Berghotel Faulhorn was built in 1830, one of the oldest mountain hotels in the Alps. Earplugs are recommended for sleeping, as the old walls are thin. Perched on a remote precipice, Berghotel Faulhorn has flush toilets, but no drinking-water supply, nor guest showers. To save money, carry extra liters of drinking water from Grindelwald. In 2022, Berghotel Faulhorn charged 4 CHF per liter for hikers' tea, and 12 CHF per 1.5-liter bottle of drinking water. The hut's roof-gathered water is undrinkable (and our squeeze-filter didn't remove the bad taste). For personal hygiene, cold water is provided in the dormitory washroom, and the private rooms have nostalgic water jugs and bowls.

  • Visitors gather at the entrance to Eisriesenwelt ("World of the Ice Giants"), the most significant cave system in the Alps. Eisriesenwelt is near Werfen in the Tennen Gebirge mountains in the state of Salzburg, Austria, Europe. Claimed to be the world's largest ice cave (42 km long), it's actually a limestone cave containing ice decorations, mostly extensively in the first kilometer. Visiting the cave requires advance reservations, parking high on mountain road, walking up 20 minutes to a cable car, walking 20 more minutes up to the cave entrance, then walking 70 minutes up and down on the guided tour, with every fifth person carrying a traditional carbide lamp with an open flame. Because the cave has no electricity installed, guides burn magnesium for temporarily brighter lighting. The main entrance is at an elevation of 1641m (1000 meters above the Salzach Valley). The carbonate strata in this part of the Alps extends from the Triassic to the Jurassic, and the caves were formed during the late Tertiary period.

  • As the last ice age melted 10,000 years ago, the impressive Aare Gorge (German: Aareschlucht) was carved by the river Aare through a limestone ridge, near the present town of Meiringen, in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, Europe. A fee is charged to access this elaborate walkway, a series of tunnels and cantilevered boardwalks open to the public since 1889. The Entrances (aboveground West and underground East) are each linked to stations on the Meiringen-Innertkirchen railway. Walking to Aareschlucht from our Hotel Victoria was worthwhile as a 3-mile addition from 3-5:00pm on our Day 7 of hiking on the Swiss Via Alpina (National Route 1). Day 7 began with hiking from Hotel Engstlenalp along Erzegg Ridge to Planplatten (6.7 miles, 1990 feet up, 750 ft down). • Mozart at the spinet, oil painting by Anton Romako in 1877 used for decoration of the Magic Flute Summer-House. Since 1880, Mozart's Birthplace has exhibited the composer’s early life at Hagenauer Haus, No. 9 Getreidegasse, in Salzburg, Austria. Mozarts Geburtshaus is a wonderful pilgrimage site for Mozart fans and history buffs. The prolific Classical music composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived 1756–1791. Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and is renowned for its Baroque architecture, with one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. The town is on the site of the Roman settlement of Iuvavum. Salzburg was founded as an episcopal see in 696 and became a seat of the archbishop in 798. Its main sources of income were salt extraction, trade, and gold mining. The fortress of Hohensalzburg, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, dates from the 11th century. In 1600s, Salzburg became a center of the Counter-Reformation, with monasteries and numerous Baroque churches built. Salzburg's Altstadt, or old town, is honored by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Busy Altstadt centers on Getreidegasse, a narrow, pedestrian street with shops selling folk costumes and antiques.

  • See Neuschwanstein Castle, the lake of Alpsee, Hohenschwangau Castle, and the towns of Hohenschwangau and Füssen from a trail above Marienbrücke pedestrian bridge, in Bavaria, Germany, Europe. Hohenschwangau Castle was the hunting lodge where King Ludwig II of Bavaria was raised. From 1833-55, the castle formerly known as Schwanstein was reconstructed by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria. Hohenschwangau became the official summer and hunting residence of Maximilian, his wife Marie of Prussia, and their two sons Ludwig (the later King Ludwig II of Bavaria) and Otto (the later King Otto I of Bavaria). King Ludwig II of Bavaria began building Neuschwanstein Castle in 1869 over ruins of a medieval castle, but never finished. He lived there only 2 years, until his mysterious death in 1886. (This palace inspired Walt Disney to build Sleeping Beauty Castle, opened in 1955 in California's Disneyland.) The tours don't allow photography. Inside, I toured rooms of exquisite decoration, including: a bedroom dedicated to composer Richard Wagner; an historical Ottoman-themed room; and a cave grotto complete with artificial stalactites & flowstone. Ludwig's extravagant throne room is based on the plan of a Byzantine church — a one-ton chandelier shaped like a Byzantine crown hangs above an exquisite floor mosaic of animals and plant life. The King's Neo-Gothic bedroom features an elaborately carved canopy bed topped with a forest of Gothic church spires, "Tristan and Isolde" wall paintings, and his chapel. Queen Mary's Bridge and higher trails offer good views — ascend by bus or walking 1.6+ miles with 600+ feet gain round trip. Austria's Via Alpina Purple trail passes through here.

  • Canyon walls overhang at the end of the Gorge Trail in Conkle's Hollow State Nature Preserve, near Logan, Ohio, USA. This hollow was named for W.J. Conkle who left his name and the date 1797 carved into the sandstone on the west wall of the gorge. Conkles Hollow is a state nature preserve operated by ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves. The park contains numerous gorges, waterfalls, overhangs, and cliffs worn out of the picturesque Black Hand Sandstone, colored from orange to tan. The Black Hand Sandstone Member of the Cuyahoga Formation was deposited early in the Mississippian Period (359-318 million years ago). It underlies the Hocking Hills like a sandwich, with a hard top and bottom and a soft middle layer. Its geologic formation involved the ancient Appalachian Mountains to the east feeding rivers which deposited sand and gravel, which later become a coarse, sometimes conglomeratic quartz sandstone.

  • Curtain Fig National Park, just outside Yungaburra on the Atherton Tableland, in Queensland, Australia. Curtain Fig National Park protects an endangered mabi forest and a large green fig tree (Ficus virens) which uniquely extends a curtain of aerial roots 15 meters down to the forest floor. This fig’s roots strangled the host tree causing it to fall into a neighbor. The 500-year-old strangler is about 50 meters tall and 39 meters around. Awkward boulders kept settlers from clearing this small patch of the Atherton Tablelands for agriculture. Much of the rainforest around Cairns has been transformed by sugarcane fields and cattle ranches.

  • An estuarine crocodile takes a freshwater shower along the banks of King George River in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Living up to 80 years, saltwater crocodiles can grow up to 23 feet long and 2,200 pounds. Also known as estuarine crocodiles, they're the world's largest reptile. Previously hunted almost to the point of extinction, in 1971 they became a protected species, ensuring healthy populations today. Crocodiles first appeared 240+ million years ago. The name "crocodile" comes from the Greek word krokodeilos, which means "pebble worm". • Ocean Safari offers the quickest commute to the Great Barrier Reef—25 minutes. In April 2023, we enjoyed the morning snorkeling tour from Cape Tribulation, in Queensland, Australia. The Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system, is honored on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Due to climate change and coral bleaching, the reef lost half of its coral cover between 1995 and 2017. By the end of the pandemic years 2020-2022, reef life temporarily bounced back due to pause in humans overfishing.

  • Italian Eryngo (Eryngium amethystinum) in the Schynige Platte Alpine Garden. From Berghotel Faulhorn, we hiked the spectacular trail to Schynige Platte (6.9 miles, 400 feet ascent, 2660 ft descent) in Switzerland, Europe. Then we took the scenic Schynige Platte cog train down to Wilderswil, where a train took us to Lauterbrunnen Bahnhof and adjacent Hotel Silberhorn. Berghotel Faulhorn was built in 1830, one of the oldest mountain hotels in the Alps. Earplugs are recommended for sleeping, as the old walls are thin. Perched on a remote precipice with great views especially at sunset and sunrise, Berghotel Faulhorn has flush toilets, but no drinking-water supply, nor guest showers.

From Planplatten, we rode 4 lifts down to Meiringen [via Gondelbahn to Mägisalp (Eagle-Express), Bidmi, and Reuti then via Luftseilbahn to Meiringen], where we walked to Hotel Victoria (0.4 miles).

  • Old Man's Cave and Lower Falls loop trail in Hocking Hills State Park, near Logan, Ohio, USA.

Lamalera village seasonally hunts sperm whale and other deep-sea species for subsistence. This 600-year hunting tradition using only sail and paddle power is allowed under International Whaling Commission regulations concerning aboriginal whaling. Some conservationists worry that commercial whaling also takes place, and that hunters use their engine-powered boats year round to catch other protected species such as manta rays, orcas, dolphins and oceanic sharks. However, Lamalera and Lamakera (on the neighbouring island of Solor) are the last two remaining Indonesian whaling communities.
