  • The Matterhorn (4478 meters or 14,980 feet, Monte Cervino in Italian, Mont Cervin in French) catches sunrise light, seen from Zermatt, Switzerland. Small electric taxis serve Zermatt, which bars combustion-engine cars to help preserve small village atmosphere and prevent air pollution. The famous mountaineering and ski resort of Zermatt lies at 1620 meters or 5310 feet elevation at the head of Mattertal (Matter Valley) in Valais canton, Switzerland, the Pennine Alps, Europe. The German word matten means "alpine meadows." Most visitors reach Zermatt by cog railway train from the nearby town of Täsch (Zermatt shuttle). Trains also depart for Zermatt from farther down the valley at Visp and Brig on the main Swiss rail network. Hike the High Route (Chamonix-Zermatt Haute Route) for exceptional mountain scenery. • The Matterhorn rises over 3,000 feet above Hurricane Creek Valley, in the Wallowa Mountains, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Wallowa–Whitman National Forest, Columbia Plateau of northeastern Oregon, USA. The Matterhorn is composed of limestone of the Martin Bridge Formation. From Wallowa Lake Trailhead, I hiked 7.7 miles one way with 3200 feet gain to Ice Lake plus 3.7 miles round trip with 2000 feet ascent and descent to Matterhorn Peak. I tented overnight at Ice Lake before returning 7.7 miles to the trailhead.

  • A mountain goat atop the Matterhorn, Wallowa Mountains, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Wallowa–Whitman NF, Oregon, USA. The mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus, or Rocky Mountain Goat) is a large-hoofed mammal found only in North America. It is an even-toed ungulate in the family Bovidae, in subfamily Caprinae (goat-antelopes), in the Oreamnos genus, but is NOT a true "goat." • In Findeln (Findelen), admire the Matterhorn and authentic Walser houses, barns, and stores built of larch timber blackened by the sun, above Zermatt, in the Pennine Alps, Switzerland, Europe. The Walser people are named after Wallis (Valais), the uppermost Rhône valley, where they settled from the 900s in the late phase of the migration of the Alamanni (confederation of Germanic tribes) crossing from the Bernese Oberland. From Zermatt, hike the Five Lakes Trail from Sunnegga Express funicular. Although especially nice for families, the 5-Seenweg loop walk is aesthetically marred with ski slope infrastructure throughout (5 dammed artificial lakes, power lines, lifts, dusty roads, snow-making sprinklers, etc). Visually, the most aesthetic features are the old wood buildings in upper Findeln, and the reflecting lakes of Grindjisee and Stellisee.

Getting there: from Fiesch, take the Eggishorn cable car for vast views, then lift back to Fiesheralp mid station, where you can enjoy walking above Aletsch Glacier via Hohbalm, Moosfluh, Hohfluh, Riderfurke, and Riederalp. Or an easier hiking option is via Betten-Bettmerhorn cable car then hiking to Riederalp-Mörel gondola.

  • See the Dom, Matterhorn and Weisshorn (left to right) from Riederalp ridge, in the Pennine Alps, Valais/Wallis canton, Switzerland, Europe. The Dom (4545 m / 14,911 ft) is the third highest mountain in the Alps and the second highest in Switzerland (after Monte Rosa). Located in the Pennine/Valais Alps between Randa (in Matter Valley) and Saas-Fee, the Dom is the main summit of the Mischabel Group (German: Mischabelhörner), the highest massif lying entirely in Switzerland. The Mischabel Group (ancient German term for pitchfork) includes many summits above 4000 meters: the Nadelgrat, composed of the Lenzspitze, the Nadelhorn (4327 m/14,196 ft "Needle Peak"), Stecknadelhorn, Hohberghorn and Dürrenhorn; and Täschhorn (4491 m south/just left of highest peak in photo), plus the flat summit of the Alphubel (4206 m / 13,799 ft, further left). From Fiesch, lift to Fiesheralp, then hike to vast views of Aletsch Glacier via Hohbalm, Moosfluh, Hohfluh, Riderfurke, and Riederalp.
