Sunspots during partial phase of solar eclipse April 20, 2023—Timor Sea offshore of the Kimberley, Western Australia. Sunspots are concentrations of magnetic flux that inhibit convection, reduce surface temperature, and appear darker than the surrounding areas on the Sun's photosphere. Sunspots appear within active regions, usually in pairs of opposite magnetic polarity.Their number varies according to the approximately 11-year solar cycle.
