A wooden statue of Tamonten protects Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall) — one of the world's largest wooden buildings — rebuilt in 1692 at Todai-ji temple, Nara, Japan. Tamonten (God of the North) is a major deity in Buddhism — one of the Four Heavenly Kings and a dharmapala (dharma protector). Nara was the first capital of Japan (710-794 AD) and the root of Japanese culture, religions, and social structure — hosting many Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.
