The village is settled on the riverside of Rio de las Vueltas, within Los Glaciares National Park near the base of Cerro Fitz Roy at the edge of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. The town is 220 km north of El Calafate. Chaltén comes from a Tehuelche word meaning "smoking mountain", due to clouds that usually form over Monte Fitz Roy.
