Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) glacier flows from Mont Blanc massif, Chamonix, France, Europe.

The serpentine Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) is an impressive glacier at Chamonix, France, Europe. From the Haute Route on the Aiguilles Rouges massif across Chamonix Valley, view the Mer de Glace emerge from Mont Blanc massif. At 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long, Mer de Glace is the longest glacier in France. It was once easily visible from down in Chamonix, but shrinkage makes it barely visible from below. In the 1700s and 1800s, the glacier descended down to the hamlet of Les Bois, where it was formerly known as Glacier des Bois.
