Reticulated giraffes in Buffalo Springs National Reserve, a protected area managed by Isiolo County Council in Kenya (offering several safari lodges and camps) in East Africa. Reticulated giraffes are a unique giraffe species (Giraffa reticulata, formerly labelled as the subspecies Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) native to the Horn of Africa, primarily within Kenya. Distinguished from other giraffes, its coat displays large, polygonal spots which extend onto the lower legs, tail, and face. A 2024 study found that the reticulated giraffe is a hybridization between northern and southern giraffe lineages. Buffalo Springs National Reserve lies south of the Ewaso Ng'iro river and offers several safari lodges and camps. In this gently-rolling lowland plain of old lava flows and volcanic soils of olivine basalt, the climate is hot, dry and semi-arid. As is typical of Kenya, two major rainfall seasons occur, with April–May and September–November seeing brief rainy spells. Across the river to the north is Samburu National Reserve.
