Mt Karakuni seen from Ebino Kogen town, Ebino Plateau, Miyazaki Prefecture, Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, Kyushu island, Japan. From Ebino Highland, we admired Mt Karakuni (5577 ft), the highest peak in Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. From Ebino Kogen, we hiked through fog around Byakushi Pond on Mount Shiratori (2.8 miles round trip with 560 feet gain). The surrounding Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park offers beautiful landscapes, famous mountains, and popular hiking trails. Kirishima is an active volcanic mountain range straddling Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures, including some of Japan's most scenic volcanic cones, craters, and hot springs. We drove to the Ebino Plateau 50 minutes from Kagoshima International Airport. Ebino Kogen means "shrimp highlands" named for the pampas grass which becomes pinkish from iron in the soil during late summer.
