Ninilchik is on the west side of the Kenai Peninsula, 38 miles southwest of Kenai on Sterling Highway, 188 miles by road from Anchorage and 44 miles from Homer. Ninilchik hosts the annual Kenai Peninsula State Fair. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act recognized Ninilchik as an Alaska Native village.
