Monasterio de San Agustín (or Iglesia de San Agustín; or Church of Saint Augustine) was built 1580-1627, rebuilt 1868, on the corner of Mejia and Flores Streets in Quito, Ecuador, South America. Ecuador’s first (short-lived) Act of Independence was signed inside this church in August 1809. San Francisco de Quito, most often called Quito, is the capital city of Ecuador (and of Pichincha province) in northwestern South America. This city of 1.4 million people (as of the 2001 census) is located in the Guayllabamba river basin, on the eastern slopes of Pichincha, an active stratovolcano in the Andes mountains.
