Pink & white flowers of liverleaf wintergreen / Pyrola asarifolia (formerly called Pink Wintergreen) is native to moist, wooded locations in western North America. Pyrola asarifolia has a single unbranched stem rising from basal rosettes of shiny, round, stalked leaves, topped by an elongated flower cluster, with between 5 and 25 heads. Leafless versions are saprophytes, which absorb their nutrients from the rich soil humus. Individual flowers are downward-pointing cups formed of five white, pale pink or reddish pink petals and centered on ten stamens. Stamens have white filaments and relatively long, purple anthers. Beneath the petals are five green sepals, longer than wide. At the base of the short flower stalks are a few narrow bracts, about as long as the stalk. Photographed in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada.
