Sgraffito (or scraffito, plural: sgraffiti) is a technique of wall decor where layers of plaster tinted in contrasting colors are applied to a moistened surface. Old wooden shutters frame a traditional window in the 17th century town of Guarda, in Graubünden canton, Switzerland, the Alps, Europe. Guarda is one of the best preserved and characteristic villages of the Lower Engadine. The Swiss valley of Engadine translates as the “garden of the En (or Inn) River” (Engadin in German, Engiadina in Romansh, Engadina in Italian).
