The Western Coral-Root is saprophytic or parasitic on roots with large, coral-like rhizomes underground. Latin name: Corallorhiza mertensiana (Orchidaceae, Orchid Family). This 12-inch high, pink (and red magenta) colored orchid was found on the hike to Rachel Lake in Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area, Washington, USA. The Coralroot grows in moist coniferous woods in Eastern and Western Washington and blooms in mid to late summer.
