On the horizon, see Marmolada (center, highest peak in the Dolomites) and the Sella Group (right). Alleghe Lake was formed in 1771 by a landslide from adjacent Mount Piz. The Dolomites or Dolomiti are part of the Southern Limestone Alps in Europe. UNESCO honored the Dolomites as a natural World Heritage Site in 2009.
