The hippopotamus or hippo is a large semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. Its name comes from the ancient Greek for "river horse." Established in 1940, Serengeti National Park is honored by UNESCO on the World Heritage List. The Serengeti Plains and Ecosystem span the Mara and Arusha Regions of Tanzania.
