The Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen or Prekestolen) rises 604 meters (1982 feet) above Lysefjorden, Norway. The nearest city is Jørpeland, in Strand municipality, Rogaland county, Ryfylke. Ice Age glaciers deeply gouged a U-shaped valley into a plateau of Precambrian gneiss, carving this cliff high over the North Sea inlet of Lysefjord. Hike 7.6 kilometers (4.8 miles) round trip to one of the most visited natural tourist attractions in Norway. The well marked route requires strong ankles for rock-hopping. For less crowding, start early and hike midweek. On a Saturday in July 2011, I had never before seen so many thousands of people mobbing a wilderness trail, despite foggy weather.
