Moss coats a tree trunk in Carkeek Park, along Puget Sound, in the Broadview neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, USA. The old growth evergreen forest (1000-2000 years old) was clearcut in the early 1900s and succeeded by today's mature forest of predominantly maple-alder, which will eventually be succeeded by evergreens (Western Red Cedar, Western Hemlock, Douglas fir, pine, and spruce). In Carkeek Park, years of hard work by neighbors and volunteers have brought salmon back to Pipers Creek, restored major portions of the forest, built miles of trails, created sustainable gardens, educated visitors, and restored a unique fruit orchard.
