Atop Mount Meru in Arusha National Park, see its Ash Cone, its subsidiary peak of Little Meru (outside the crater at left), and distant Mt Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, East Africa. At 4,562 meters (14,968 ft) elevation, Mount Meru is the fifth-highest mountain of Africa. It's the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro. At the center of its crater is the Ash Cone, and Little Meru is outside left. Summiting Mt. Meru normally entails ascending and descending 11,000 feet over 24 miles round trip over a tough four days. (But to consolidate the ranger-led group, a truck ride saved us 2.2 miles and 1050 ft gain.) Starting from Momella Gate is the only official route. Mount Kilimanjaro is visible 70 kilometres or 43 miles east of the summit of Mount Meru. Much of the mountain's height was lost about 7,800 years ago due to a summit collapse. Mount Meru's caldera is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) wide and most recently had a minor eruption in 1910. The movie Hatari! was filmed at the foot of Mount Meru.
