The current Big Buddha Hall was rebuilt in 1692 at 70% the size of its predecessor, which had been destroyed by fire. Nara was the first capital of Japan (710-794 AD) and the root of Japanese culture, religions, and social structure, featuring many Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.
