New Zealand inchworm, a larvae of a geometer moth. The geometer moths are moths belonging to the family Geometridae of the insect order Lepidoptera, the moths and butterflies. Their scientific name derives from the Ancient Greek geo 'the earth' and metron 'measure' referring to how their larvae, or inchworms, appear to "measure the earth" as they move along in a looping fashion. Photographed on Pororari River Track in Paparoa National Park, in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island.
