Lago del Quadrado below Paso Quadrado. Near El Chalten, Argentina, South America.

We ascended glacier-carved orange rocks above Lago del Quadrado (muddy green lake at right) to reach Paso Quadrado. Initially, hike the scenic Rio Electrico Valley to Refugio Piedra del Fraile ("Stone of the Friar", 14.5 km round trip). From the refuge, a path ascends very steeply to Paso Quadrado (gaining 1340 m vertically in 8.4 km round trip) for a spectacular view south. The last kilometer climbs up steep snow which could require crampons if icy. Views keep improving the higher you go. El Chalten, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, Patagonia, South America.
