Statue of the Roman goddess Diana at Allerton Garden, on the south shore of Kauai, Hawaii, USA. In Roman mythology, Diana was the goddess of the hunt, the moon, and nature (associated with wild animals, woodland, and talking to and controlling animals), and virgin goddess of childbirth and women. She was one of the three maiden goddesses, along with Minerva and Vesta, who swore never to marry. Although she was eventually conflated with the Greek goddess Artemis, she arose independentently in Italy. Deer and oak groves were especially sacred to her. According to mythology (in common with the Greek religion and their deity Artemis), Diana was born with her twin brother, Apollo, on the island of Delos, daughter of Jupiter and Latona. Nestled in a valley transected by the Lawai Stream ending in Lawai Bay, Allerton Garden is one of five gardens of the non-profit National Tropical Botanical Garden (ntbg.org).
