Mendel Haus is decorated with frescoes dating from 1886 in Kastelruth/Castelrotto, a comune in Südtirol/South Tyrol/Alto Adige, in the Dolomites, Italy, near Bolzano and Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi). After Austria lost World War I, its South Tirol (Südtirol) became Italy's Alto Adige. German is the most spoken language in Kastelruth. The Dolomites were declared a natural World Heritage Site (2009) by UNESCO.
