A sign along the forested road to Hohenschwangau Castle pictures King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845–1886). Hohenschwangau Castle was the hunting lodge where King Ludwig II of Bavaria was raised, in Hohenschwangau village, near Füssen, in Bavaria, Germany, Europe. From 1833-55, the castle formerly known as Schwanstein was reconstructed by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria. Hohenschwangau was the official summer and hunting residence of Maximilian, his wife Marie of Prussia, and their two sons Ludwig (the later King Ludwig II of Bavaria) and Otto (the later King Otto I of Bavaria).
