Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall) — one of the world's largest wooden buildings — was rebuilt in 1692 at Todai-ji temple, Nara, Japan. Left of the Big Buddha is a statue of Kokuzo Bosatsu (God of Boundless Space Treasury). At the end of the hall on the left is a wooden statue of Kōmokuten (God of the West), a major deity in Buddhism — one of the Four Heavenly Kings and a dharmapala (dharma protector). The current Big Buddha Hall was rebuilt in 1692 at 70% the size of its predecessor, which had been destroyed by fire. Nara was the first capital of Japan (710-794 AD) and the root of Japanese culture, religions, and social structure, featuring many Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.
