Fossilized shrimp burrows look like squiggly iron rebar or reddish corn cobs, in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico, USA. During the Cretaceous period (60 to 80 million years ago), the Great Inland Sea covered this area. Crustaceans known as Callianasa major built tunnels under the sand, which filled with iron deposits after the sea receded, leaving casts of their burrows. Chaco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
