A blue Delphinium flower on Mount Kenya in Kenya, in East Africa. Delphinium is a genus of about 300 species of annual and perennial flowering plants in the family Ranunculaceae, native throughout the Northern Hemisphere plus the high mountains of tropical Africa. All Delphiniums are toxic to humans and livestock. We trekked on Mt Kenya for 7 days in tents by ascending the remote Timau Route, rounding the Summit Circuit counterclockwise, and descending the Chogoria Route. (Ascending the Sirimon Route is shorter and equally scenic.) The Republic of Kenya is named after Mount Kenya, the second-highest peak in Africa (exceeded by Tanzania's Mt Kilimanjaro). Mount Kenya National Park is honored by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. Hundreds of kilometers of electric fences discourage poaching and illegal logging, and prevent the park's wildlife from exiting and damaging adjacent crops.
