Senpiro Falls, Yakushima island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Senpiro-no-taki is one of many pretty cascades easily accessible by car and foot along Yakushima’s perimeter road.. Yakushima is a quiet, subtropical island with ancient cedar forest. 20% of Yakushima is designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Yakushima’s rocks are mostly soft granite – tectonically lifted higher than any peak on neighboring Kyushu (a volcanic island 70 times bigger). A Japan Airlines Commuter flight spirited us from Itami Airport (ITM / Osaka International Airport) southwards to remote Yakushima island, on the 30th parallel. As a semitropical island with nearly 2000-meter-high mountains, Yakushima scoops a lot of rain, almost daily in the mountainous interior, at least lightly.
