To reach Paso Quadrado, we ascended steep snow using trailrunning shoes (but could have required crampons if icy), near El Chalten, in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, Patagonia, South America. The muddy green lake at right is Lago del Quadrado and the smaller blue lake was unnamed on our maps. Initially, hike the scenic Rio Electrico Valley to Refugio Piedra del Fraile ("Stone of the Friar", 14.5 km round trip). From the refuge, a path ascends very steeply to Paso Quadrado (gaining 1340 m vertically in 8.4 km round trip). Views keep improving the higher you go.
