Usuki Stone Buddhas: Nyorai-san-son-zou / Three Amida Nyorai Statues (Hoki Stone Buddhas 1st Cluster, 3rd Gallery), Oita Prefecture, Kyushu island, Japan. These 3 Nyorai statues — Kongokai Dainichi Nyorai (middle), Shaka Nyorai (right), and Amida Nyorai (left) — were sculpted at the end of the Heian period. Buddhist scrolls and prayers were likely stored in the pedestals' openings. Dating from the Heian Period 794-1185, the various galleries of Usuki Stone Buddhas are carved from soft, volcanic rock blasted from nearby Mount Aso volcano. In Japan, Buddha statues are usually made of wood or metal, but stone statues are rarer — Usuki's are the only stone Buddhas in Japan to be designated as national treasures.
