The Tōmyō-ji Three-storied Pagoda, the oldest wooden pagoda in the Kanto region, was originally built in Kyoto in 1457 in the former Toumyouji Temple (during the Muromachi period, 1333-1573) and was relocated to Sankei-en in 1914. Sankeien is a spacious Japanese-style garden and open air museum in southern Yokohama. It exhibits 19+ historic buildings of cultural importance from across Japan. Sankeien’s landmark 3-story pagoda was built in 1457 in Kyoto Prefecture and moved here in 1914. Opened in 1906 by a wealthy silk trader (one of the leading Japanese industrialists of the Meiji era), the garden was damaged in World War II, then reestablished in the 1950s after being donated to Yokohama City.
