The Tasmanian Wilderness was honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, expanded in 1989. The most extensive dolerite formations in the world dominate the landscape of Tasmania, where magma intruded into a thin veneer of Permian and Triassic rocks over perhaps a million years during the Jurassic breakup of supercontinent Gondwana in the Southern Hemisphere, forming vast dolerite/diabase sills and dike swarms.
