A bonkei miniature garden tray with bonsai chrysanthemums (kiku no bonsai) — Sankeien Garden and historic Japanese building museum, in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Honshu island, Japan. This beautiful miniature garden arranged in a tray is a style called bonkei. In their second year of growth, several cultivated varieties of chrysanthemums can be trained into a bonsai — a technique which mimics the shape and scale of full size trees. In Japan, the chrysanthemum (kiku) represents fall and is often used as a floral offering or provides Buddhist symbolism. It’s the emblem of the imperial family and appears on Japanese passports. We saw beautiful kiku exhibits/competitions in Hiroshima & Yokohama.
