Skålatårnet/Kloumanntårnet, Loen, Skåla mountain, Jostedalsbreen National Park, Norway

Ascend to Skålatårnet ("Skåla tower" or Kloumanntårnet, 1843 meters / 6047 feet elevation) on Skåla, the highest tidewater mountain in Norway. Doctor Kloumann built the tower in 1891 with hopes to cure clients with tuberculosis. The hike starts east of Loen village in Stryn municipality, Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. Between Tjugen camping and Loenvatnet, park at the pay lot and ascend steeply on a well marked trail. Stepping stones greatly improve footing on the upper portion protected within Jostedalsbreen National Park (nasjonalpark). Hikers allow at least 5 hours up and 3 hours down on this strenuous ascent of 1800 meters (6000 feet). For a fee, the public can sleep in the tower's 22 beds, as administered by Bergen Turlag, a subsidiary of the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). Jostedalsbreen National Park, protects the largest ice cap in continental Europe.
