Fig tree arch on the trek up Mount Meru, a dormant stratovolcano, in Arusha National Park, Tanzania, East Africa. At a height of 4,562 meters (14,968 ft), it is the fifth-highest mountain of Africa. It's the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro (which is visible 70 kilometers or 43 mi to the east). We climbed Mount Meru via the Momella route, starting at Momella gate on the eastern flank. Much of the mountain's height was lost about 7,800 years ago due to a summit collapse. Mount Meru's caldera is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) wide and most recently had a minor eruption in 1910. The movie Hatari! was filmed at the foot of Mount Meru.
