This zig zag passage of ramparts is designed to slow attackers at Kumamoto Castle (first build 1607, rebuilt after 1877, WWII, 2016) — Kyushu island, Japan. Originally built in 1607, few of Kumamoto Castle's structures have survived intact, but it's been diligently rebuilt multiple times: after the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, after WWII, and after the severe 2016 earthquake.
