Dragon gargoyle in rain gutter downspout, Appenzell village, Switzerland, Europe. The legend of St. George slaying a dragon was a brought back with the Crusaders. According to legend, St. George (who may have lived about AD 280-303) was a Roman soldier of Greek origin and officer in the Guard of Roman emperor Diocletian, who ordered his death for failing to recant his Christian faith. As a Christian martyr, he later became one of the most venerated saints in Christianity.
