The artwork on the lower gallery (the first landing) represents the physical and spiritual origins of Hopi life, as painted by Fred Kabotie, a Hopi from second Mesa. Desert View Watchtower was built by architect Mary Colter in 1932. Inspired by the architecture of the ancestral Puebloan people of the Colorado Plateau, Mary Colter modelled the tower after Hovenweep and the Round Tower of Mesa Verde, plus she integrated works by other artists. This image was stitched from multiple overlapping photos.
