The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a mammal indigenous to interior western and central North America. The pronghorn is often incorrectly called an antelope (which is native only to Eurasia and Africa). The pronghorn species is the only surviving member of the family Antilocapridae, which is part of the Artiodactyla Order (even-toed ungulates; ungulates are hoofed animals). Some close relatives of the pronghorn (several other species in the Antilocapridae family) failed to survive after humans entered North America 15,000 years ago. Visit the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, between the towns of Magdalena and Datil, in New Mexico, USA.
